Description:
One of the biggest places where networking engineers stumble when deploying IPv6 is because they don’t have a sound
understanding for how IPv6’s base protocol Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) works. Many of the critical differences from IPv4 stem
from this protocol. During this session, we’ll examine NDP in depth, including looking at packet captures to decode them and well as
explore how NDP is used to achieve key functionalities in IPv6. We’ll round up with how NDP plays in provisioning systems – SLAAC,
DHCPv6 (stateful and stateless) as well as DHCPv6-PD.
Topics:
- NDP overview
- RA: packet structure & options & packet analysis
- RS: packet structure & options & packet analysis
- NS: packet structure & options & packet analysis
- NA: packet structure & options & packet analysis
- How NDP is used to accomplish
- Link-layer address resolution
- Duplicate address detection
- Address auto-configuration
- Neighbour Unreachability Detection
- Provisioning IPv6 hosts & CPEs: SLAAC, DHCPv6 & DHCPv6-PD
Instructor
Mukom Tamon, Head Capacity Development, AFRINIC
Instruction Method
30% theory & explanation + 20% packet capture analysis + 50% labs
Each student has his own virtualized environment to play with, including 3 routers, different clients, a DHCPv6 and DNS server and Wireshark to analyze all communication. It’s never easier to try different configurations and check what’s happening.
Prerequisites
This pre-conference hands-on lab workshop requires attendees to have a basic understanding of IPv6. The labs provide the perfect opportunity to gain working experience with IPv6. So if you are not familiar with IPv6 concepts such as addressing, extension headers, neighbor discovery etc, consider taking the 3-day Hands-On-Class on June 1 to June 3 at Digicomp. Here you can find the description. For registration of the Hands-On class go here, you will get CHF 600.00 discount when you book together with a conference ticket.
Lab Setup
Labs are remote, please bring your own laptops to access the labs.
Location & Time
This workshop is taking place on Wednesday June 15, from 9am to 5pm at Digicomp Academy, Limmatstrasse 50, 8005 Zürich.
Registration
For the Neighbor Discovery Deep Dive you can register here on the conference website.
